Healthy Vegan Cookie Sweeteners
Healthy cookies use natural sweeteners in place of artificial sweeteners or pure refined sugar. Honey is a common natural sweetener used in non-Vegan healthy cookie recipes. This can be problematic when trying to find healthy cookies that don't use honey as a wholesome alternative to unhealthy sugar. What healthy alternatives to sugar are there besides honey to sweeten healthy vegan cookies?
Agave nectar is a direct alternative to honey. It's sweeter but less viscous than honey. It's also sweeter than regular refined sugar. Although there are several types of the agave syrup, light and dark are the two most commonly offered in stores. Lighter syrups go through less heating and more thorough filtration in order to yield a more mild flavored taste. A milder flavor is desirable so that it may be used in a wider variety of foods. Darker agave syrups have a stronger taste since it is not as thoroughly filtered. Both can be healthy alternatives in healthy vegan cookie recipes. The type of healthy vegan cookie will determine which type is used.
Date sugar is another natural ingredient to consider for making a vegan cookie. Date sugar is made from dried dates making for a rich sweetener and is best used as an alternative to recipes calling for brown sugar. These dehydrated dates are ground into tiny pieces so it can be used as a sweetener but still contains its health benefits like its large array of vitamins and minerals, even iron. It also has high fiber content.
Organic evaporated cane juice for vegan cookies replaces traditional refined sugar making for a more wholesome cookie. Granted both sweeteners are made from sugar cane, however evaporated cane juice keeps more nutrients since it is far less processed than refined sugar. Since it's organic it's also produced without pesticides and other harmful chemical fertilizers. It's also closer to the unprocessed original plant unlike refined sugar.
Pure maple syrup is a form of sugar like white sugar, however, maple syrup has a more organic profile as it's harvested sap from maple trees. A sweetener such as this makes for a healthy vegan cookie since it keeps it's minerals like calcium, potassium, sodium, and copper. It's also known to have a higher antioxidant content than white sugar.
A variety of healthy vegan cookies can be made with these wholesome sweeteners. If you're not into baking, examine the labels on cookies at natural food markets and find the ones that include sweeteners like these.
