Vegetarian Survival Guide to Argentina

Argentina is Mad Cow crazy for meat, and they eat almost 150 pounds of beef per person per year. Traditional barbecues are typical weekend and holiday events. Most people in Argentina cannot comprehend a life without beef or meat. Lonely Planet named Argentina the least veg-friendly country in South America in 2009 but don't believe them, it is possible to avoid the ubiquitous parrillas (grill houses) for some tasty vegetarian cuisine. It is getting easier to be a vegetarian in Argentina as there is a growing generation of grocery stories, markets, and restaurants catering to the small but burgeoning community of vegetarians.

Buenos Aires is the steak capital of the world, but it is a European-like metropolis. Try these vegetarian options in the nation's capital:

1)      Medialunas: The name means half moon, and you can finish this breakfast in three bites. They may not be nutritious but they are delicious and full of sugar. The panaderias on every street are packed with hard to resist pastries and cakes. The medialunas are a delicious, sweet, cheap choice for breakfast or snack.

2)      Bread: With so many bakeries in Buenos Aires, there is no excuse not to buy fresh bread. Bread is served in every restaurant before your meal, and often accompanied by a garlic mayonnaise or other dip.

3)      Empanadas: Although meat fillings are common, it is easy to find cheese and onion versions, which are quick and cheap.

4)      Dulce de Leche: This caramel spread or jam is everywhere, in deserts, factures (sweet pastries), and on breakfast foods.

5)      Helado: The creamy gelato here is extremely addictive that you may skip the cone and buy a half kilo tub. There are so many flavors to try and so many heladerias to try them at.

6)      Alfajores: This sweet snack is made up of two round biscuits filled with a bountiful of dulce de leche. There are many variations, most commonly with a chocolate coating.

7)      Pizza: Argentina has a strong Italian influence which has led to many delicious pizzerias. This vegetarian staple is a good option for a cheap meal.

8)      Ravioli: Another Italian specialty that will be easy to find on menus across Argentina.

9)      Armenian Mezze: The Palermo neighborhood has a small but lively Armenian community that produces delicious foods. The Middle Eastern influenced mezze is delectable.

10)   Salad: Easy to find a most restaurants, some of the following vegetarian restaurants have the best salads though.

Want a specific vegetarian restaurant to try during your Buenos Aires vacation? Consider one of these top picks.

1)      Artemisia: The two locations in Palermo have delicious finds. The menu is constantly changing to reflect inventive and seasonal vegetarian meals. They have a huge selection of tapas , featuring fresh and tasty vegetables, cheeses, and dips.

2)      Kensho: This 100% vegetarian restaurant is located in Villa Ortúzar. There are only a few low tables with cushions on the floor, giving the restaurant a homey feeling. The four course set menu is made from inventive fresh incredients.

3)      Bio: The small, entirely vegetarian restaurant was one of the first organic spots in the city. Located in Palermo, the quinoa risotto is amazing. Meals come with homemade brown bread and pumpkin spread.

4)      Sarkis: This Armenian restaurant has meat dishes as well as a wide range of vegetarian meals. The quick service and flavorful food makes this Middle Eastern restaurant a winner. Try the jambra (mashed red peppers with walnuts), fried aubergine, or tabouleh.

5)      Meraviglia: Walk over to Palermo for lunch at this family-run café. They don't describe themselves as vegetarian but the healthy, natural, organic combination allows for a great number of delicious vegetarian salads and sandwiches.

6)      La Fábrica del Taco: Mix it up from Italian at this simple Mexican restaurant. There aren't a ton of meat-free meals but it is worth the trip for the delicious vegetarian tacos, guacamole, quesadillas, and refried beans.

7)      Spring: This vegetarian buffet has mostly Chinese dishes. If you can eat a lot, it is a good value.

8)      Pura Vida Resaurant: This juice bar also serves soup, sandwiches, and salads. You can find delicious liquados or jugos made by the raw foodist and vegan owners.

Buenos Aires, is not the rest of Argentina. After leaving the capital, you may find it more difficult to find satisfying vegetarian options. You are likely to find a lot of medialunas, pizza, pasta, and empanadas. Be sure to try humitas, a traditional vegetarian dish made of corn, cheese, and onion wrapped in a corn husk and boiled. Quinoa is a nutritious grain-like food that is sometimes paired with veg-friendly foods. Of course, all of this will be much easier if you can speak some Spanish and explain your eating requirements and check if a meal contains meat. Tell the restaurant staff, "soy vegetariano" or "no como carne, pescado, y pollo."

If you're traveling to Argentina, vegetarian or not, salud!
