The Strongest Link: Your Blended Family

The moment you walk out that door, sign the divorce papers and set up shop elsewhere, you pledge to stay truer to yourself, which in return will bring a newfound happiness and fulfillment.

As time passes and things start to change, you feel free and ready to start over, start the next chapter and you feel good about it.  This flood of emotion, the freedom to let the past go and sit in the present, while looking towards a bright future culminates on a single attribute that all people strive for:  Strength.  When you feel strong, you can do anything.  When you feel strong, you feel focused, empowered, confident.  Ultimately, you feel a connection you may have never experienced with your children before, like the weakest link got stronger, just like you, and they are joined together, ready for anything.  Perhaps it is what you always envisioned, spouse or not.

And then you start dating again.  You find Mr. Super Duper Ultra Right and eventually decide that your kids should meet his kids.  Of course everyone clicks and you find out that the more time you all spend together, the easier it is.  You move in together and no matter how big your new house is, or how easily the money flows, the links stop feeling so strong.  In fact, you don't even know if you're in the ring still.

In a blended family, it seems as though the world is working against you.  That's because it is.  I know this because I am a mother of six sometimes, of four most of the time, and of one at least all of the time.  Each day is constantly changing, kids are coming and going as often as the laundry.  And as my partner and I deal with the transitions, so do the children.  Except they don't say, "This is really, really hard" and then go hide outside with a cigarette.  They slam doors, push each other around, they refuse to eat dinner, and take toys and break them.  Being a witness to this really hurts.  Mostly because they don't understand what they are feeling, but also because I feel the same way and can't protect them.

I often feel like an auctioneer on crack:  "Put that down.  Don't hit your sister.  Stop teasing the dog."  All at an impressive lightning speed, while cooking dinner and helping with homework.  "Peas or corn with your chicken, peas or corn with your chicken, peas or corn, peas or corn."  I swear being one of the parents of a blended family automatically qualifies you as a Navy Seal.  Because while all this is going on, you mustn't break.  Nothing spoils the circus like a weeping ring leader.

The mothers of my partners children are impossible.  One of them lives like a pig and dresses her daughter like a hooker.  Bras and knee-high pleather boots are not for six year old girls.  I keep telling myself that I'm not going to be a grandmother before I turn 40.  The other one (also in her 30's) still lives with her mommy and daddy and can't hold a job, let alone make responsible choices.  Spending your tax return on a downpayment for a sports car that is repossessed three months later is just not that wise.  She is a complete mess.  Because these two women come up so short, I find myself going the extra mile just to be hated by their children.

Let me pause for a moment and cool down.  When I started writing this article, I really wanted to present my reader with some general advice, or four easy steps to follow, but I can't.  It's not that black and white.  Especially when there are so many parents involved, posing as adults with sensibility.  I struggle enough with my own ex-husband and reminding him that he is a parent in his thirties, not a bachelor on spring break. Please pick up a little slack.  Its like playing a horse in a theatrical event and you are the ass end, while the front person refuses to walk a straight line.

Although this exhausting quest for a perfect blended family will not be concluded within this article, I do have a few key points that I have found working.  It has taken us over three years to get a good hold on what we have going on, and although we are surprised with nonsense from time to time, we can usually bounce back well.

While everyone else is scattered about and running in opposite directions:  YOu and your spouse or partner must remain on the same page at all times.  That means recognizing pace, helping out with household chores and kid duty.  Both parents must be universal and talented enough to do laundry, dishes and the homework check. This is the strongest relationship you have ever had, and will ever have, because of your combined abilities and desire to make this work.  Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, can break the tie that you two share.

Keep communication front and center.  Give each other breaks (don't forget to take a break together too: date).  Cry and hug each other.  Talk to people that can help (we see a family therapist whenever we feel the need).  Everytime we are all present (yes, all eight of us), we hold a family meeting.  Sometimes the kids want to talk about being sad and missing their parent or each other, other times they want to vote for more ice cream and laugh about it.  So long as the line of communication (and your mind) is open, they will always know they can talk to you, that what they say and feel matters.

Remember that kids depend on the parent with direction.  Not on the one who buys them more toys, or never says "no".  Be strong, link up strong and stay in the game for the long run.  Welcome the blend for better or for worse and know that strength is in numbers.  It is in diversity, in unique character.  Most of all, strength is in all of you.  And it only gets more resilient as the bond grows.
